weekend challenge




Happy Friday!  I have been looking forward to this weekend all year because it is the Golden Leaf Marathon Weekend!!! This has to be one of the most unbelievable races in the U.S.; you run up Snowmass Mountain, terrain to Aspen and then run down Aspen Mountain, all through beautiful groves of Aspen trees that are the most glorious golden color!

I discovered this race by accident last year.  I just happened to fly in to Aspen the night before the race and ran in to a couple looking to sell their registrations.  I of course promptly bought their registrations for my husband and myself.  We were in no way trained and I had never in my life run a trail race, nerveless one that went straight up one mountain and down another.  I was terrified, terrified that I would fall, get lost or just fall apart.  I did fall (numerous times), but I finished and it was one of the most incredible and beautiful races ever.

The whole experience taught me that many times it is those things in life that scare us that prove to be the most rewarding.  It is only when we exit our comfort zone that we grow and experience all that life has to offer.  So this weekend, I challenge you to try something new, something that scares you………you never know, it just may be one of the most incredible experiences of your life!

maximize calorie burn on a treadmill

As much as I love running, I have to admit that I hate running on a treadmill.  Five minutes on a treadmill can feel like an eternity!!  As summer approaches though and temps begin to soar, I know my days of nice runs outside are limited.  I created the below two treadmill workouts in an attempt to “spice” up a typical treadmill workout and make the machine bearable.

Research shows the most effective way to boost calories burned on a run is by including short bursts of higher intensity, so I included many high intensity sprints in both workouts.  My sister did the level one workout earlier this week and I did level two last night and they are both pretty challenging!  Give them a try and let me know what y’all think.
